A short photo journal of a trip to Cape May, NJ during July 2023, beginning with a walk along the beach and the foliage surrounding it.
We ate dinner one night at Cape May’s famous restaurant, The Lobster House—a restaurant my family frequented when I was growing up. The building—or rather, complex—that houses the restaurant isn’t easily missed when you cross the bridge entering the island. In 1939, New Jersey seafood mogul Jess Laudeman bought property from the Reading Railroad, which later became Fisherman’s Wharf, home to the locally famous establishment.
A dinner out usually follows up with ice cream in the shopping district, Washington Mall and then a walk back home to watch the sunset from the deck overlooking the nature conservancy, South Cape May Meadows.
I was lucky enough this evening, however, to catch instead the full duration of a massive summer storm rolling through—the type that only really happens along the coast. I was fascinated by superstorms and fishing tales growing up, so I always hope to see one at least once every summer. This one especially did not disappoint as huge forks of lightning crackled across the sky every couple of seconds for what felt like an hour and swirling clouds danced above the ocean.
